I often joke about there being a ‘Lord of the Rings’ line or quote to fit every situation in life. Well, I would I’m a ‘Lord of the Rings’ fan! In saying that there is depth to some of the lines and quotes from the film or book whether from Gandalf, Bilbo Baggins, Frodo, or Sam or any of the other characters. “It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it.” (Isaiah 55:11)

Andy B is a champion multi-tasker. When you look after children, or the home, it’s just something you become quite good at! You also get very good at it, when operating a lorry mounted crane with 7 controls – and you’re using 5 of them at the same time – and while offloading an abnormally large item, with pedestrians who seem to be rushing to their own end, and ignoring any number of safety warnings, barriers and people you’ve put in place to keep them away from what you’re doing! That one might just have been more specifically a regular situation Andy B encountered as a truck driver – it may not something you’re likely to encounter when you’re popping to the shops! But, that multi-tasking skill is something we’ve all learned to do during Covid. In a family situation it can be a really useful skill to learn. But, in the workplace, it becomes less so. And when it comes to spending time with God, being able to multi-task becomes a real issue.

Jeremiah 29:11 - New Living Translation: For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. I was flicking through some music the other day, and came across one of older albums. It’s a live version of Garth Brooks on tour, and the one song that always jumps out at me is the I’ve linked below, and it’s the title for this blog. Throughout our life, we’ve often faced trials of many kinds, and this frequently leads to prayer. But, sometimes, our prayers are more like we’ve rewritten that well known scripture above.

Go Deeper with Andy B, as he looks at Ecclesiastes 12:1-14 and what it all means. He challenges those of us who are young not to waste our youth; it is short and time flies by. He also reminds us of the dangers of making decisions based on how many likes we get on social media.

He also reminds us of the dangers of making decisions based on how many likes we get on social media. In addition, Andy B draws our attention to the man who had the most pleasure in life, King Solomon himself, and what conclusions he reached on the subject of pleasure.

This post is mostly about me asking for your recommendations and suggestions for your favourite podcasts and Bible reading plans or study books. We’re taking a couple of weeks from creating our usual output, and it’s giving us an opportunity as a family to catch up on all sorts of things, rethink things and rest as a family in a different way. We’ve washed the car, dumped a broken sofa at the tip, rearranged some furniture and taken a look at our lives to see where we have been wasting time, or where God might be calling us to do other things. Busy can be great, but being too busy – for too long – is never something to cultivate, because it means we probably think we know more than God (never a good place to let ourselves arrive at)!

With discussion around Fish and Chips, Sweet and Sour Sauce and Gloves hands, Andy B does his usual and takes ordinary, every day objects and situations, and helps us dig deeper into the basics of how Faith and Prayer work together. With a very strong reminder, and warning - from the book of James - about why we need both Faith and Prayer, Andy B encourages us to all to get on our knees more, to learn to know Jesus better.

Starting out the real basics of Prayer, Andy B takes a good look at what Prayer is. He also looks at when we should pray, how we should pray. He also answers the question of what we can pray! Returning to the most simplest forms of prayer – conversation – Andy B seeks to show us how prayer is a gift from God, that God desires us to use, because God uses our words to change situations around the world.

Andy loves the kitchen! And he was inspired, a while ago, about how saucepans can teach us much about pressure in our lives, and letting that pressure go with God. Today, he has a saucepan and a colander…both are great at straining, but with each the BerryBunch either lose rice – if they’re a bit too energetic pouring the wet rice in, or slipping the saucepan lid – and losing all the veg. Even with a strainer, they are only as good as the size of the hole and the size of what you’re trying to strain through! In life, there will always be things we’re trying to add in or take out, and we use filters and strainers every day to do that.

For our family devotional today, I thought about colour, and how it can sometimes feel like the colour has gone out of our life. There is a great episode of Garfield, which we watch during the devotional today. We spend 20 minutes thinking and focusing on the bible and God. Then we spend time praying together.
